A community-driven project brings a beloved local landmark back to life. After years of disrepair, the Withernsea War Memorial Clock has been fully restored. The iconic timepiece, installed in 1947 to honor those who served in World War I and II, was in danger of being lost forever.
Thanks to the dedication of the Friends of St Nicholas Church and generous support from the community, the clock has been brought back to its former glory. The restoration project included repairing the clock’s mechanisms, restoring its faces, and installing new technology to ensure its continued operation.
Darrin Stevens, chairman of the Friends of St Nicholas Church, led the restoration effort. “It was a long and challenging journey, but we were determined to bring this beloved landmark back to life,” Stevens said. “The clock is a symbol of our town’s history and heritage, and it’s important to preserve it for future generations.”
The restoration project was made possible thanks to funding from various sources, including grants, donations, and fundraising events. The community rallied behind the cause, with many people contributing their time and money to help bring the clock back to life.
“We are incredibly grateful for the support we received from the community,” Stevens said. “Without their generosity, this project would not have been possible.”
The clock’s restoration is a testament to the power of community and the importance of preserving our history. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served in war and a symbol of the town’s enduring spirit.
