Withernsea Public Invited to Choose New Photographs for Italian Gardens

Residents of Withernsea are being encouraged to vote on a fresh selection of images to replace the weathered boards currently displayed in the Italian Gardens. The initiative is part of the ongoing Withernsea Riff-Raff project led by Darrin Stevens, who has been collecting personal postcard collections from locals to preserve and showcase the town’s rich history.

Through contributions from various collectors, Stevens has digitised a unique array of photographs featuring forgotten aspects of Withernsea’s past—its people, businesses, buildings, parks, and more. Supported by a £5,000 grant from Pier Project funds, the revitalised display will also complement an upcoming QR code feature that offers an interactive experience.

A shortlist of 30 photographs has been carefully chosen from hundreds of submissions by collection curators, and the public is now being asked to vote for their favorite 10 images. Stevens explained the vision behind the project:

“We believe that the heart of Withernsea lies in its people. By inviting the community to participate, we aim to ensure the new display reflects the spirit and heritage of the town. These curated images carry Withernsea’s story, and we want the residents to play a crucial role in bringing this history back to life.”

Highlighting the importance of refreshing the current boards, Stevens continued:

“The old images have deteriorated over time, losing their charm and clarity. We want to revitalize them for future generations, ensuring they continue to inspire and inform. With the community’s involvement, this project will restore Withernsea’s visual story and strengthen the connection between its past and future.”

The 30 shortlisted photographs are featured on pages 18 and 19 of the Gazette, and residents are invited to select their top 10 images. The winning photographs will eventually be printed and installed.
