Following the resounding success of last year’s recreation of the iconic image of Withernsea’s “Flat Cap Gang,” a new opportunity awaits to step back in time. Local history enthusiast Jim Blake has announced plans for a second, similar event this April, inviting the community to once again don period attire and capture the essence of bygone days.
Last year’s event was a hit, drawing 37 residents and two canine companions into suits, flat caps, and moustaches to replicate a cherished photograph of workmen from Queen Street. This snapshot in time not only celebrated Withernsea’s heritage but also brought together residents in a unique act of community spirit and nostalgia.
This year, Jim aims to push the boundaries further by recreating another historical gem: a photograph depicting hundreds of people standing outside the iconic Pier Towers, believed to date back to around 1920. It promises to be another spectacular gathering, uniting participants in a tribute to Withernsea’s rich past.
Scheduled for Sunday, April 20, this event invites residents to channel the style and atmosphere of the early 20th century. Whether you’re a history buff, photography enthusiast, or someone who loves a good dress-up, this is your chance to contribute to a living tapestry of Withernsea’s community memory.
Mark your calendars and prepare to step back to a moment in the 1920s, bringing history to life once more. For Withernsea, and for everyone who takes part, this promises to be an unforgettable day of collective storytelling and celebration.
