Unearthing Withernsea's Hidden History: A Call for Postcards

Withernsea, a town rich in history yet with stories untold, is on the brink of a revival through a unique community initiative.

Darrin Stevens, the visionary behind the Withernsea War Memorial Clock project, has embarked on a quest to bring forgotten tales from the town’s past to life. He is appealing for old postcards as part of an ambitious new project.

Darrin’s goal is to compile the largest-ever collection of postcards showcasing Withernsea’s history into a captivating book. To do this, he is urging locals and history enthusiasts alike to dig through their attics and albums for any old postcards they might possess. Each postcard will be meticulously scanned and digitally enhanced, preserving its historical essence while returning the original back to its owner. Contributors will also receive credit for their submissions.

I am looking for old postcards, family pictures, and photographs of Withernsea history,” says Darrin. “I want to scan them and then return them, and I will credit all images if used.” He is particularly interested in images spanning from 1900 to 2000, but remains open to more contemporary contributions if they capture the town’s spirit.

The scope of this project is vast. Darrin seeks postcards that depict Withernsea’s streets, people, and families; events, shopkeepers, and their staff—snapshots that truly capture the essence of Withernsea’s charm. From unique architecture and street art to the railway station, churches, and the lighthouse, every corner of Withernsea holds a story waiting to be told.

He is also keen on capturing moments from popular venues of the past like the Kinema, Chanticleer, Sun Lounge, Teddy’s Nightclub, and Eldons. Whether it’s candid shots of families enjoying their routines or vibrant gatherings at these beloved spots, Darrin believes these images will weave together a rich tapestry of Withernsea’s evolving identity.

So far, the project has seen contributions from individuals like Wendy Graves and Christopher Robin, but Darrin hopes to involve many more in this community effort. His aim is to piece together a historical narrative of Withernsea, illustrating the evolution of its streets, people, and shops.

If you possess postcards that could contribute to this historical endeavor, or if you want to learn more about the project, Darrin Stevens welcomes your involvement.
