Violet Day: Honouring Withernsea’s Most Famous Nurse

St Nicholas Church in Withernsea will host a special “Violet Day” on Saturday, 11th October, to commemorate the extraordinary contributions of nurse Florence Cavell.

The day will feature local historian Godfrey Holmes, who will deliver four insightful talks on “The Life & Times of Florence Mary Scott Cavell”. These talks are scheduled for 11am, 12pm, 1pm, and 2pm, offering attendees the chance to delve into the inspiring life of Florence Cavell and hear stories about the Cavell sisters. Visitors are also welcome to ask questions and learn more about this remarkable family.

Florence Cavell devoted an incredible 32 years – from 1913 to 1945 – to serving Withernsea’s hospital, sanatorium, and convalescent home, navigating through the challenges of both World Wars. After her dedicated career, she chose to retire in Withernsea, where she spent the remainder of her life.

Florence was the younger sister of the renowned nurse Edith Cavell, celebrated for her courageous actions during the First World War, which led to her being remembered as a heroine and martyr in 1915.

Admission to Violet Day is free, and visitors can enjoy refreshments and homemade cakes in exchange for a small donation. Contributions towards the maintenance of St Nicholas’s church clock will also be gratefully accepted.
