Imagine strolling through the charming seaside town of Withernsea, but instead of just seeing the present, you’re transported back in time. Thanks to an exciting new project, “Withernsea Riff-Raff,” this vision is becoming a reality. Photographer Darrin Stevens is spearheading an interactive trail that promises to breathe new life into the town’s rich history and encourage exploration.
A Name with a Story:
The project’s intriguing name, “Withernsea Riff-Raff,” is a nod to the town’s past. As Darrin explains, it stems from a historical report detailing how the arrival of railway excursions brought working-class visitors, leading some wealthier residents to depart, fearing the “riff-raff.” Darrin aims to reclaim this historical term, turning it into a symbol of community pride and exploration.
A Digital Time Capsule:
In recent months, Darrin embarked on a mission to compile the town’s largest digital collection of historical images. He sought out old postcards and photographs, and the community responded overwhelmingly. With the invaluable assistance of local historian Wendy Graves, who is meticulously piecing together the stories behind each image, the project is taking shape.
The collection spans from the 1800s to more recent times, showcasing everything from iconic landmarks like the beach, railway station, and lighthouse to snapshots of daily life, including families, tourists, and local events. Withernsea Carnival, parades, and sunny beach days are all captured, offering a glimpse into the town’s vibrant past.
Interactive Exploration:
The heart of the project lies in placing over 100 QR codes throughout Withernsea. These codes, strategically located at landmarks like the old bandstand, Pier Towers, and the former railway station, will unlock a treasure trove of historical images and information when scanned with a smartphone or tablet.
Imagine standing on the promenade and seeing a photo of the same spot decades ago! Each QR code will reveal a piece of Withernsea’s history, highlighting its significance and sharing stories from the past. The information gleaned from the backs of old postcards will also be integrated, providing fascinating insights into notable events and local tales.
Revitalizing the Town:
Darrin envisions the project as a catalyst for tourism and community engagement. By encouraging residents and visitors to explore areas they might not otherwise visit, the trail aims to revitalise the town and boost the local economy.
“Withernsea has faced challenging times, and this project aims to showcase the resilience and spirit of the community,” Darrin says. “By following a postcard trail and discovering Withernsea’s history, participants will also support the local economy and contribute to the town’s revival.”
Community Collaboration:
The project is a true community effort, with Wendy Graves playing a crucial role in uncovering the stories behind the images. “I love Withernsea,” Wendy says. “When people say it’s boring, they aren’t looking.”
Looking to the future, the project aims to collaborate with local organizations to create themed walks and trails, starting at St. Nicholas Church. Participants can even earn “Bronze,” “Silver,” and “Gold” achievements by completing different numbers of QR code scans.
Making It Happen:
To bring this exciting vision to life, Darrin is seeking investment and applying for grants. Funds will be used for essential equipment, web development, and the creation of physical markers like sample tiles for shop fronts.
The “Withernsea Riff-Raff” project is more than just a history trail; it’s a celebration of community, a journey through time, and a catalyst for revitalization. By embracing technology and uncovering the town’s hidden stories, Withernsea is poised to become a destination for history enthusiasts and explorers alike.
